What became of the large 2 story house and barn/mill at the corner of East branch and Bativia ? On Route 30 and County 36
It was the Chamberlaiin/Davis mill in the 1850’s
I asked a local elder and the only mill he’s aware of in that vicinity was the Almiron Sweet sawmill, but it was a bit farther up Denver-Vega Rd (Co. Rd. 36) and in 1856 may have been the L. D. Kelly sawmill site. If you mean the mill/barn was at the junction of the Batavia Kill and the East Branch, that would be at what is now Frog Alley, where there is still a large 2-3 story house right next to the river. But my source says he’s not aware of a mill having been located there. Frog Alley doesn’t appear to have existed when the 1856 Beers Atlas was drawn, nor does the map show a mill in that vicinity. The map does show an S. Tompkins blacksmith shop at the intersection of Co 36 and NYS 30. No Chamberlain or Davis shows on the 1856 map in that area. Could you provide a bit more information?
